The Azores in Portugal offer 88 official bathing sites, all of them coastal – there are no lakes or rivers included. Of the 87 assessed sites, 84 are rated 'excellent', 2 'good', and 1 'poor', giving an excellent rate of around 97 percent. The coastline of this Atlantic archipelago is characterised by volcanic rock formations, clear water, and largely unspoiled coves.
